Review:
As part of the Stuffnthingz 2007 business plan of increased awareness, I decided to go on the road. Now mind you I am already on the road going to horse shows in my little RV, but now I have it loaded with products I sell on my websites so I can Vend at the venues I attend. For the most part these venues are AQHA horse shows, and NRHA horse shows. As part of this
effort I wanted to have internet access to take credit card sales via Paypal as well as offer customers the opportunity to
"surf" my websites for products that I don't have with me.
I use Verizon phone service so I went and perused their wireless options and found this USB modem. I ordered it through my corporate account manager and received it with in 2 days. I was told I had 15 days to try the product and could return it if it would not work. I opted for the 2 year contract to get the lowest price for the device as well as lowest monthly rate ($59.99). I had the service up and running in 5 minutes on my old Dell laptop. The laptop is an inspiron 8200 running XP home. The only problem I have with the modem is that it is pretty cumbersome when plugged in and you can easily bump it, dislodging it from the USB port. I like this gizmo so well that when my mom complained about her dial up service (she lives in the sticks out in the country) I suggested she try this. It works perfectly for her too! She has some sort of Y connector that allows the modem to sit on the table versus being directly plugged in. I will be looking to have the same sort of setup.
The software you install is pretty basic. The only issue I have had with it is sometimes It will not register that the modem is plugged in, thus the "connect" button is greyed out and no network shows in the list. I havent found the perfect work around to ensure the modem is properly detected all the time. In the 2 cases it had this problem I rebooted.
Suggested research before you try it: Be sure to look at the regions which are Broadband enabled. If you don't get broadband, they have a slower older network with broader reach that you will be connected to. So far I have always been in range of the Broadband. It is a tad slower than my 3mb/sec connection at home and of course is slower than my T1 line at work, but it is tolerable.
I also love to use it to test my websites for load times on a slower connection. This is all relative because my slowest connect speed has been 400k.
As far as pricing goes, I see that right now you can get this modem for free with a new contract, I wasn't quite so lucky as I paid like $49 with the 2 year plan...
