June 28 - July 4 2008 California Coast
On Sunday, June 29th we hooked up the Jeep to the RV and headed down the road to California. In Everett, Washington, it was sunny and 80+ degree weather, we had been swimming every day. The weather where we were headed was a brisk 60 and overcast. So needless to say we were pretty grumpy about the trip. My husband had made the reservations 2 months ago. Our destination was Del Norte Redwood Coast State Park for the low tide on 7/3.

Our first "experience" was a severe steering problem in the RV. We were just pulling out of a gas station when my husband commented that the steering was horribly off. We turned back around and unhooked everything at the gas station and drove the two rigs separate around the block, all was well, re-hooked everything back up and went through every step very carefully and voila, my husband realized the problem! He had forgotten to put the key in the Jeep ignition and set it to accessory, HA! Here is my new cheat sheet I have attached to the Even Brake device so we will NEVER forget that critical step:
  1. Turn car off, brake on
  2. Set up brake following instructions
  3. put Transfer in N
  4. put Transmission in P
  5. set key to first Accessory position (this prevents the steering wheel from locking)
  6. release emergency brake.
I had even booted up the laptop, connected to the internet and had a service guy from Camping World on the line to help us out. Camping World had done the installation and they were more than ready to help us out.

After a huge sigh of relief, we continued on our journey.

We drove straight through to California and stopped for the night at a rest stop. The next morning we charted our path to Del Norte, choosing a scenic byway, highway 96. What a huge mistake that was. The highway was more like 101, but through all the forest fires. 4 different times we had to be escorted along the highway for construction, and for fire zones. One area had just had a fire go through it and the road was charred, with burned debris and ash everywhere. It was smoky and not very fun at all. We drove over 100 miles on that road. Next, we hit 101, yet more un-fun. More smoke and then fog. At a couple of points along the way our RV brakes shook the whole front end, actually it was more like "wobbled" because of the strain. Last year for our trip to Utah we never had this problem, so we will be taking it in to have the brakes looked at asap.

we finally arrived at the camp ground, it was chilly and foggy. We had a nice camp spot, but were surrounded by miserable tent campers. At least I thought they looked miserable, all bundled up by their fires. We drove in to town, checked out movie times, got some dinner and then returned to our camp. We had brought along our laptops with our new inverter. Well that was a bust, and finally we strung 12v power cords across the rig, one going to the cab 12v and the other to the house 12v. We had fun playing a new game, choosing not to go out in the foggy cold.

I was dissappointed in our interver, we will need to have a real inverter installed that can truly handle the power. That night we blew the house 12v fuse which meant that we were down to one 12v to share. The next day we were busy checking out the area, and we went to see "WALL-E" (cute movie). We tried to sit outside in the early evening after going for a campground stroll, but the mosquitoes were very bad. Again I felt bad for the campers, no wonder they were all bundled up. At least it wasn't foggy.
