September 2006 - First official boondocking weekend!
Ok after over 2 years of RV ownership, we finally embarked on a true boon docking weekend. First we drove over highway 20 and on the other side we drove down into a "fire" zone. There was a buzz of activity and helicopters taking water up to the fire. Most camping places were blocked and closed off. Fortunately our Forest Road was off on the other side, far enough away that it was open. We drove up and up, the washboard road wreaking havoc on all of my stored items. I realized right away that I need to pack differently for forest road travel. We found a camping spot close to dusk. Of course it was a challenge to get level. We ended up going in front first and drove up onto a rock with the left wheel, then put everything we had under the right tire to get somewhat level.

The creek there was quite noisy which was great! only one car drove down the road that night. The next morning we adventured up the creek to a waterfall. Small but fun. After our morning adventure we set off to go shop in Winthrop. I got a pair of 5-10s for more secure adventure shoes. I drove us out to Twisp then down to Wenatchee. Our goal was to take a particular back road to Ellensberg, but it ended up that the road was gravel and at one point it told us "not recommended for passenger cars" we were crushed. So, we turned around and went to swap driving duties and I promptly twisted my ankle in my new shoes! Bah! my ankle swelled up instantly. So much for good adventure shoes! We meandered back to the concrete road and went up the right fork which was an open Forest road. I had packed our gear appropriately so everything stayed put this time. We found another awesome camp spot by a creek, only this time in a desert setting. Again the next morning we hiked, my ankle grumbled to be made to work but I wasn't going to let it stop us. I got a great picture of the RV nestled in the trees way down below the crest of our hillock we climbed up.

All systems worked perfectly, we ate great meals, slept wonderfully after gazing up at the stars, watching the bats fly overhead.

Our trusty home is filthy now, but it sure looks cool with all that road dirt on it. I also noticed the right brake light is out... On our to get list for boondocking is a small shovel. We could have used it to help with leveling. At this point I am very glad to have a shorty motorhome, but I am wondering if some sort of 4x4 RV is in our future!
