September 2005 - Yellowstone
Well, We did it! 7 days/6 nights on the road in our RV and it was awesome!

For those of you who like to crunch numbers:
  • Miles Driven = 1811
  • Camp fees = $126
  • Gas = $527.31
  • Most expensive gas = Clarkston Washington $3/gallon, average price in Wyoming $2.79/gallon
  • Food = $200 (not a single meal ate out,and some food left over)
  • Propane = $9 (4.5 gallons)
  • Gas Mileage ranged 8.5 to 10.5 mpg
  • Speed avg 67mph on major highways, avg 50 on smaller highways(took 12 home through Idaho, great drive!)
  • Repairs or problems - only one, I cracked the tub, fixed with Duct Tape
  • favorite evening RV activity. For me it was playing with my new iPod Nano. For my husband, playing PC games.
The scenery was wonderful and the weather worked for us for the most part. The Temperature at night in Yellowstone was a chilly 27 degrees. Our Heater kept us toasty though.

I have to say that Yellowstone is a very special place, the Geo-Thermal activity (Warning: link to my 2 meg movie-very amateurish) makes it a must see at least once in a lifetime event. The wildlife (slideshow here soon) is a great bonus, and I am sure that many folks go just for the wildlife, and perhaps to fly-fish.

Our short RV worked perfectly as our daily driver and camp vehicle, but it did mean we broke camp each morning. For us it was no problem as we enjoying having lunch or snacks, or just resting when we felt like it. We would be checked out by 10am. Do our sightseeing etc from 10am till about 3pm, then would pull in to a park camp ground for the night. We spend 4 days in the park total, camping 2 nights in it, and one night on the outskirts.

RV observations? Well, there are lots of RVers out there, even with the increase in gas prices. My favorite RV was the Winnebago View. I didn't like the looks of the long rigs pulling Toads, for us it would be overkill. Some of the big 5th wheelers look like a house! It was always amusing to see a relic being lovingly used by their dedicated owners. Some of them were quite rickety. I was disappointed that I never saw my personal Class A favorite, the Safari Trek. Another odd RV was a very small Class C rental from Cruise America. It is a Ford Truck nose with a 21' Motorhome attached. The two pieces are joined by a rubber accordion hole where the back window would be. The cab looks comfy enough, but you have to get out of the cab and go in through the door in the back to get to the living area. I suppose kids just slide on through the hole.

Post - trip humor. What greeted me when I got home
