September 2005 - preparation for Yellowstone | | Next week (9/24-9/30) my husband and I are going to drive to Yellowstone on our first official Long Distance RV trip. It feels weird not having to pack every little thing like our normal Tent Trips. The RV is pretty much packed except for our clothes, current books etc and perishable food items.
I have been reading up on Yellowstone. I can tell you that the temperature at night is getting pretty chilly! Just last night it was a record low at Jackson Hole for the whole US at only 19 degrees...brrrrr!
Most of the camp grounds are still open, some close 10/1, others later in the year and Mammoth is open year round. I have targetted 3 campgrounds for us to stay at. Since they are all a fairly short drive from each other, we will likely go scope them out first and decide which one to stay at first. I think we will try them all over the course of our week, but only if we don't like our current spot.
We do not have a tow vehicle to each day we will be packing up the RV to go sightseeing.
A few interesting tidbits about Yellowstone that I have discovered.
Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872.
- It is illegal to call for animals, i.e. howl like a wolf or call like a moose.
- Swimming, bathing or wading is illegal in hydrothermal features or streams flowing from those features.
- You must stay at least 100 yards away from bears and at leas 25 yards away from all other animals including bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, wolves and coyotes.
